Our Grade 7 Individuals and Societies students stepped out of the classroom and into the real world with a visit to the Hajdúhadház Community Center. Their mission: to connect what they’ve been learning about the Human Development Index with lived experiences in our local community. Armed with curiosity and active listening skills, students engaged with staff and community members to understand how the center provides opportunities and support.
They quickly discovered a powerful truth—that education is the key to building a better future. Through thoughtful questions like “Are there inequality issues faced by the people here?” and “Do people have access to basic medical care?”, our students made meaningful connections to their unit’s key concept of global interactions and explored how people support one another, both locally and globally.
What makes this visit even more inspiring is the ripple effect of last year’s trip. After hearing the stories of the community, one Grade 7 student was moved to take action. She launched a resource drive that has since grown into her ongoing Changemaker Project, providing much-needed support for the Hajdúhadház Community Center. Her initiative is a shining example of how service learning can spark lasting change, proof that one student’s compassion and leadership can positively impact many lives.
Our students returned from this experience with new insights, deeper empathy, and the realization that fairness and development are not abstract concepts but real challenges and opportunities faced by people every day
