Our Team

Leadership

Thomas McLean

Director

My name is Tom McLean and I am honored to introduce myself as the Director at ISD. My application to Debrecen was inspired by the vision for ISD to be a key factor in the development of its region. I have learned, through conversations with ISD students, parents, teachers and administrators, how much the school means to the Debrecen community. There is a powerful desire to create a school culture in which everyone grows and that students develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to become successful contributors to society. I strongly believe that together we can leverage the International Baccalaureate (IB) to build a school culture in which everyone can flourish.

My understanding of international education has been shaped by seventeen years of experience teaching, learning and leading in five vastly different schools in Europe, Africa, South East Asia, and the Middle East. This experience has taught me that the IB provides an outstanding infrastructure on which to build a school that teaches students to think for themselves, care for others, and act in the best interests of all. I believe my most important role as Director is to help create the conditions in which our community can learn together as individuals and as an organization. Our community must build a shared vision, goals, and strategies around a common understanding of the IB but first we must take the time to learn about and care for each other.

My Scottish-Hungarian family are deeply invested in the success of ISD. Abi, my wife has a teaching role in the Kindergarten and our sons Jack and Sean joined the PYP at ISD. Abi and I are both global citizens with an interest in people and a taste for adventure. We met in The Gambia in 2006, while I was working in my first international teaching role and she was conducting cultural anthropological research on behalf of ELTE university.

Sean and Jack were both born during our time in the Philippines. They are kind, happy, and active boys with a love for sports, particularly football. They have benefited enormously from their international education thus far, but we believe ISD will add a new dimension by helping them to consolidate their identity as global citizens. Jack and Sean are native English speakers, but we have been committed to them becoming bilingual since their birth. Abi only speaks with them in Hungarian and we believe that immersion in the Debrecen community will result in them becoming native Hungarian speakers as well. Bilingualism will enable our children to become truly internationally minded by enabling them to think from multiple cultural perspectives.

My Hungarian wife and I are delighted to live in Debrecen with our three boys, each of whom was born in a different country. This multi-cultural, bilingual, American-Hungarian heritage has encouraged my family to become internationally-minded world citizens. We are deeply invested in the long-term success of ISD as it contributes to the economic and educational development of the region and country.

Rosalind Fawcett

ES Assistant Principal

My name is Rosie Fawcett and I am delighted to introduce myself as the PYP Coordinator at ISD. I was one of the original cohort of international teachers that came to the school and have loved being part of the exciting journey as the school has evolved and grown.

I started my teaching career as a teacher of English as an additional language before obtaining my mainstream teaching qualification in London. Following a few years of teaching in London I moved to Mexico where I began working with the PYP Framework.

What I love about the PYP is that it encourages students to be active agents of their own learning. It also develops students holistically and teaches them to be responsible community members who want to make a positive difference. As such, my goal is to also make a positive difference to the community of ISD.

Molly Mosier

Elementary School (ES)

Zita Aranyi

KG3 Homeroom teacher

My name is Zita Aranyi and I grew up in a small village in the county of Hajdu-Bihar. My interest in teaching started when I was a little kid, so after primary school I was studying in the pedagogy department of my high school. Then I learned to be a primary teacher in the Reformed Teacher Training College of Debrecen.
After finishing college, I moved to England thanks to the Comenius Fellowship. I was a teacher assistant in a primary school and nursery of the city called Newcastle upon Tyne for 3 years.
When I came back to Hungary, I started to work in Budapest. I taught in two different private schools when I intermitted my working days because of my son’s birth.
I was happy to join the team of International School of Debrecen because their teaching system is very familiar to me. As I am getting to know the IB PYP program, I feel that the children who have the chance to learn in this system are very lucky. During my work in this school the main goal for me is to give the best of my personality helping these kids learn and develop emotionally and socially.
I am not a scientist, but I want to show most of the world to the kids. I do not know which road leads to the heart of certain kids, but I believe that every path can be found with love and patience.

In my free time I love to be with my family, going on trips. I am interested in zero waste products – to design and sew, but also love to read books with a cup of coffee.

Ágnes Borbás

KG1-2 Homeroom Teacher

My name is Ágnes Borbás, but everyone calls me Ági. I have been working as an early childhood educator since 2014, and I am proud to be a part of the ISD family since 2019.
As an educator, I am passionate about educating and working with young children. They never cease to amaze me, and I learn something new from them everyday. For me it is prior, to build a trustworthy relationship between me and the children.
I am getting familiar with the Reggio Emilia Approach, and trying to use that way of thinking when I am with my curious learners. This approach mainly focuses on wondering with children about what they experience, think and feel and on encouraging children to make sense of their world.

I graduated at the University of Debrecen as a Kindergarten Teacher and also completed the requirements of the specialized training module of Learning Foreign Language At An Early Age. After that, in 2017 I got a master degree as an Educational Scientist, also at the University of Debrecen.
During my university years, I had the opportunity to spend 5 months in Australia by winning the Campus Hungary scholarship. During this time, I worked in Queanbeyan as a preschool teacher intern with a group of children aged 4-5.

Outside of the classroom I love spending time with my family and with my rescued dog Roy; I enjoy observing the nature around me, gardening and cooking.

I am dedicated to contributing to an educational environment that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and empathy. Melinda Csiki

ES-MS Hungarian Teacher

My name is Melinda Csíki. I was born in Székelyudvarhely, Transylvania, but I moved to Debrecen almost 30 years ago. In 2003 I graduated from the teacher-communicator department of the Kölcsey Ferenc Reformed Teacher Training College in Debrecen. Since then, I have been teaching primary school children with great affection at the Hatvani István Primary School in Debrecen.

My guiding principle as an educator is to help nourish lifelong learners, which is evidenced by the fact that in 2010, in addition to teaching, I obtained a diploma in mathematics and technical education. This diploma qualifies me also to teach upper secondary and high school education. Following this, in 2017 I graduated from the University of Miskolc as a Public Education Manager. I personally love to learn, and I love to ignite a love of learning in my children.

The most important pedagogical principles in my work are responsibility, motivation, consistency and complexity. I communicate these principles to the students daily. I love the PYP because it allows the children to lead their educational journey. I love the emphasis placed on developing the whole child. As a teacher who understands the importance of students' feeling confident when challenged, I really enjoy working creatively within the PYP system.

I am a happy mother of two children. In my free time I like to spend time with my family and friends, take photos and travel.

Vanessa Dineen

G4 Homeroom Teacher

My name is Vanessa Dineen and I am thrilled to join ISD as a grade 4 Teacher. I grew up in the northeastern part of the United States, near Boston. I was lucky to be raised by adults who were passionate about education, and many who were educators themselves. Growing up, I couldn’t imagine doing something other than teaching.

I received my undergraduate degree in History from a small school in North Carolina, Queens University of Charlotte. I also received my teacher certification here. My first teaching job was at a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina teaching grade 4. Since then I have taught grades 3-5 in the United States (Rhode Island, Maryland, and North Carolina), Saudi Arabia and China. While in China I obtained my graduate degree in education from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

There are many aspects of the IB philosophy that resonate with me personally and professionally. Academic and social-emotional growth occurs when learners feel safe to be themselves. The PYP requires learners to be supportive, encouraging and active members of the classroom, school and larger communities. Growth also occurs when learners are engaged in the learning process. The PYP allows learners to authentically engage in the concepts. By fostering agency, learners can seek answers to their own inquiries and develop the means to share their knowledge with others.

- Kǒngzǐ (孔子, Confucius)

I am a native English speaker from Canada with over 18 years of teaching experience. I have earned Qualified Teacher Status in the UK in addition to a Teacher Certificate from the USA and from Canada. I am currently enrolled in the Master of International Education degree program with the College of New Jersey.

I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society, it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of, and sensitive to, their individual needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.

My other passions are spending time in nature and using my hands to restore, repair and create. These two passions have led to a life full of: hiking, biking, camping, working at a ski resort, becoming a SCUBA Master Instructor and an NACD Cave Diving instructor, crewing sailboats, working with the Artificial Reef society, building houses and lapstrake boats, completing SCUBA salvage and cleanup missions, fixing computers and restoring cars and motorcycles. I have been able to use the artisan skills I have honed through my varied experiences to support my students with their independent learning projects, PYP Exhibitions and after-school activities.

Through authentic relationships with my students, I inspire and nurture agentic, passionate, self-directed learners who have a voice in their education and take ownership of their learning. I am a student-centered educator who values all learners by celebrating diversity.

In Bangladesh, my students inquired into various social organizations that promoted social justice and partnered with them to create infographics and advertise in our community. Completing personal inquiries and taking action are very important parts of the PYP experience, and I am excited for my students to have the opportunity to take action in our community here in Debrecen and become life-long change-makers.

Borbála Rácz-Telkes

G5 Assistant Teacher

Coming from a Hungarian family of educators and having taught at various schools both in Hungarian and British primary and secondary schools, I cannot think of anything more challenging and rewarding at the same time than educating children. As a teacher, my priority has always been helping students find and use their own voice, build their confidence and proudly express their thoughts and views, while remaining open-minded and respectful.
After gathering many years of teaching experience in public and private education both in the UK and in Hungary, I am delighted to join the ISD team of the most dedicated and enthusiastic teachers and principals I have ever met. In this wonderfully unique school we have the opportunity to create something truly outstanding and valuable through collaboration, open communication, inspiration from colleagues and students, too. I believe that in these surroundings and with such professional attitude from the staff, the focus from our students and their emotional, mental and educational needs will never be shifted, which will always be our priority.

Tina Raventós

Librarian/Technology Integration Specialist

My name is Tina Raventós. Born and raised in Lima, Peru. I’ve always had a passion to learn and visit new places and cultures. In school and university I did a few exchange programmes to Germany and the UK and before Debrecen I worked and lived in Qatar for 8 years. I have a passion for libraries and technology and I believe building genuine connections with my students helps me build a library to fit their needs, where they feel supported and where they will learn to be critical thinkers and digital citizens. Being a librarian gives me the chance to be part of my students' journey in the IB PYP and it always makes me proud to see their growth and achievements.

Maranda Schwartz

G5 Homeroom Teacher

I am thrilled to be a PYP educator at ISD. As an internationally-minded person, I thrive when learning with and from many different cultures. Growing up in the USA (Miami, Florida), I was surrounded by people from all over the world, which inspired me to explore. After teaching in the US for a few years, I ventured into international teaching. I previously taught in Warsaw, Poland and Sao Paulo, Brazil. For the past five years, I was living in Denver, Colorado working at a PYP school. I hold a masters degree in curriculum and instruction, with an emphasis on literacy. My passion for literacy stems from this degree and comes alive in the classroom with the students.

As a PYP teacher, I embrace the curious minds of students by following an inquiry model. I encourage the students to think critically and creatively, while building opportunities for collaboration. My favorite part of my job is watching the students make the connections between concepts and get excited about what we are learning.

After Guatemala, I found a job teaching at GEMS American Academy in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
I finished working on my second Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of New England and then moved back to Shanghai, China, to work at Shanghai American School. My second stint in Shanghai also blessed me with finding my wonderful wife, and we have two exceptional children.
I am passionate about empowering students in their autonomy with independence in learning and believe in a fully inclusive classroom where every student has a voice and choice. Student social and emotional growth and learning are at the forefront of my instruction. I look forward to what the new school year will bring.

Tara Morgan Stevens

G5 Homeroom Teacher

My name is Morgan Stevens, and I am thrilled to be joining ISD for the 2023-24 school year. I am from Tennessee, USA. Joining me is my husband, David Stevens, and our two children, Gabriel and Moonyeen.
I didn't always know that I wanted to be a teacher, though I knew early on that I was meant to serve others in a meaningful way, one that encouraged others to believe in themselves and that anything was possible for them. I believe Life always finds a way to support our heart's desires, so I like to think that teaching found me.
In 2010, I began my teaching career as a Special Ed. teacher in a public school in Texas, USA. teacher in the Behavior Unit. This was truly an amazing journey as I developed a new perspective on the unique diversities of students coming from many different walks of life.
I moved to Shanghai in 2014 to teach at Shanghai Community International School. My experiences included 2nd & 5th grade and 6-7th grade Lang. Arts & ESOL. I was fortunate to have had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the school's transition into the PYP Programme in 2016 and helped lead three PYP Exhibitions.
Together with the students, we work together to create an inclusive and compassionate classroom environment based on the foundations of mutual respect and the power of "I CAN!". My primary goal is to foster and facilitate a learning environment that engages and empowers students to develop their confidence within themselves as well as their passion for lifelong learning.

Abigél Tomsits

Visual Arts Teacher

Hello, my name is Abi Tomsits, and I'm excited to be the new art teacher in PYP this year. As a former early years teacher, I'm passionate about building positive relationships with my students and creating a safe and stimulating environment while having fun together.
This year, my mission is to cultivate children's creative confidence and get them excited about art making so they can develop their identities as artists who enjoy the process of creation. Children will be provided with choices and opportunities for experimenting, exploring various artists, mediums and techniques, developing their artistic skills and collaborating in our student-directed art studio. I'm looking forward to sharing this year's creative journey with your children.

Dalma Tóth

G3 Assistant Teacher

In my spare time, I enjoy kayaking, climbing and learning French (my latest challenge).
I have always been interested in social issues, politics, education and the visual arts. That is why I chose a career in sociology. However, I realized quite soon that I wanted to be a teacher. I studied sociology and education at the same time. During my studies I was a teacher in a rural school, teaching disadvantaged and vulnerable children. I am also a member of NGOs that are focusing on the development of rural areas and giving disadvantaged children the opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities.
I am currently finishing my PhD studies in sociology and social policy. I am working on a dissertation on well-being, bottom-up decision making and exploring what people define as success, failure and elements of faith. I believe that in every community we have our own definitions of these concepts and I hope to be a good mentor to help students achieve their dreams through the idea of edutainment. I also think that a school like ISD is a place where we can be our best selves academically, socially and emotionally, too.

Tibor Vad

ES-MS Physical & Health Education Teacher / ASA coordinator

I’m Tibor Vad and I am very excited to be part of the ISD family. I have been a Football coach and a Geography - Physical Education teacher for over a decade. I am a proud parent of two beautiful boys, Marcell, 12, and Peter, 10. My wife is also a PE teacher and my colleague.
I got my degrees in Geography and Physical Education in Nyiregyháza followed by an MS degree in Teaching Physical Education in Pécs.
Shortly after graduation, I moved to the UK with my wife. I was fortunate to collaborate with some amazing teachers and professors as a Fitness Manager at the University of Cambridge Fitness Centre. That position allowed me to understand that a healthy and active lifestyle plays a vital role in people’s cognitive and emotional development.
Alongside my Fitness Manager role, I always helped the local gymnastics club around Cambridge which helped me to reflect upon my own teaching practice and to explore different teaching methods.
Following my career in the UK, I returned to Debrecen to teach P.E. in the Hungarian education system. In addition, I am fortunate to work as a Manager at the DVSC Football Academy with children with special educational needs. It is uplifting to work in a professional environment where children can feel safe, be recognized for their hard work, whilst having fun. For me, it is much more than football training because small achievements like smiles on their faces count as exceptional results.

Viktória Vadné Markovics

ES Physical & Health Education Teacher

I’m Viktoria Vadné Markovics, a gymnastics coach and Maths - Physical Education teacher. I was raised in Debrecen. I am a happy mother of two young boys, Marcell, 12, and Peter, 10, my husband also teaches here.
Becoming a gymnast at a young age has defined my entire life. It helped me understand the importance of hard work and enjoyment. In addition to educational values, I consider enjoyment to be of utmost importance.
I got my degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education in Nyiregyháza followed by MS degree in Teaching Physical Education in Pécs. Shortly after graduation, I moved to the UK with my husband where I developed a reputation in competitive and non-competitive gymnastics classes in different school and kindergarten settings.
As owners and head coaches of the City of Cambridge gymnastics club, we coordinated the work of more than 500 gymnasts on a weekly basis, managed their coaches, and mentored them.
I also cooperated with several primary school P.E. teachers in Cambridgeshire to help them improve the local gymnastics curriculum.
The experiences I gained in England helped me to realize that movement is the foundation of all higher-order learning activities. It is absolutely important in learning to speak, read and write, so the quality movement development of the first 7 years of life cannot be emphasized enough.
After moving back to Debrecen I spent the last 8 years sharpening my teaching skills in the Hungarian education system at a popular primary and secondary school in Debrecen.
My goal is to guide as many people as possible to lead a healthy, active and mentally balanced life. I love seeing my students improve and achieve their goals - that’s what keeps me going and this is why I am excited about the opportunity to be part of the ISD community.

Petra Boglárka Virág

G2 Assistant Teacher

My name is Petra and I’m from a small village in Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg county. I went to university in Debrecen, I got my degree in Communication and Media Sciences in 2015 and in Primary School Teaching in 2018. I spent the past five years at a primary school in Kölcse, teaching English.
During my university years I had the opportunity to travel to the USA as a part of a cultural exchange program. I spent three summers working at Camp Michigania in Boyne City, Michigan. I think of this time as a life changing experience that shaped my mind and way of thinking for the better forever.
I enjoy getting to know different cultures and traditions, so I am really happy I get to join the diverse community of ISD.
I am excited to work in the IB system because I think its methods align with my teaching philosophy. I aspire to create student-centered learning environments, and I believe that – especially with young learners – we need to build on students' curiosity, creativity and eagerness to experience new things. IB methods allow children to develop academically while also focusing on their emotional and social well-being.
I spend most of my free time with my family, friends and my two dogs Bosco and Rudi. I also enjoy reading and watching movies.

Virovec Viktória

G3 Assistant Teacher

I’m Viktória Virovec. I was born and raised in Mátészalka, Hungary. I graduated as a teacher of English and Mathematics from the University of Debrecen in 2019. In the same year, I started my doctoral studies. As a PhD student, I had the opportunity to teach university-level courses to both Hungarian and International students. During these years, I taught English at a kindergarten as a volunteer for an entire school year. I also worked as a primary school teacher at Epreskert Primary School, I taught Mathematics to kids aged 11 or older. During my career as a teacher, I have always put the needs of children first. I believe that everyone should be compared to themselves and not to others. As long as you are better than your previous self, you are developing and taking steps forward in life. I would like to motivate my students to value the tiniest goal that they manage to achieve and see their learning journey as an exciting, life-long development that they are responsible for. Teaching the kids lexical knowledge is important, but teaching them how to think and create knowledge are crucial. As a teacher and researcher, I see knowledge from a different perspective. To me, real knowledge is the ability to select, process, and combine information in a way that creates something valuable for ourselves and for the whole community. I have always been open to new perspectives and I strongly believe that every individual can contribute their unique thinking and perspective to the shared knowledge. I am glad that I have the opportunity to work in a group that consists of teachers who share my passion for teaching students practical knowledge and invaluable skills.

Bettina Zelenák

EAL Teacher

My name is Bettina Zelenák, and I've been living near Debrecen since I was born. After finishing my high school studies, I started my teaching studies at the University of Debrecen, and in the summer of 2021, I earned my master's degree in English language and culture teaching and Hungarian language teaching. During my university practices and after obtaining my diploma, I taught high school students with whom I easily found common ground, but I've always wanted to teach younger children as well.
In my opinion, inquiry-based education helps children better understand the world, and because I believe in lifelong learning, I'm curious to learn more about the IB system and how this program can enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching.

Zsolt Béres

Physical & Health Education Teacher

My name is Zsolt Béres. Originally from Hungary, I pursued my passion for physical education and geography, earning both my BA and MA degrees in Hungary. As a certified fencing coach, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my expertise at ISD.

During my 11-year tenure in England, I had the privilege of teaching physical education and geography, where I honed my skills and embraced the diverse educational landscape. Additionally, I obtained an Edexcel diploma in drama and acting, adding a creative dimension to my teaching repertoire.

My journey as an educator has been shaped by my love for working with people, especially students who possess a genuine passion for learning and growth. I am deeply committed to fostering an environment where students feel inspired, challenged, and empowered to reach their full potential. As a fencing coach, I bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the role. I believe in the transformative power of sports and the values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship that fencing instills in young athletes.

I am eager to contribute to the vibrant community at ISD and to collaborate with colleagues who share a dedication to excellence in education. Together, I am confident that we can create meaningful experiences and opportunities for our students.

Shamae Delima

Lab Technician

I am Shamae Ria Delima from the Philippines. I finished my bachelors with the degree BSc in Fisheries from Davao Del Norte State College in my country and have finished the degree MSc in Hydrobiology here in Hungary. I’ve always been fascinated with science, especially laboratory experiments. I am very elated to work with ISD as a Science Technician, letting me gain more experience in laboratory management, experiment and research.
I once worked at Davao Del Norte State College, as an administrative assistant for 2 yrs. before coming to Hungary. I was aiding the program chairpersons of BSc Food Technology, Fisheries, Marine Biology, and Forestry in running the different programs, making sure that all academic and program requirements are up to standards required by accreditation institutions.
IB curriculum is completely different as to what I have first encountered and worked with, but it has really impressed me so much. With this kind of learning, I believe kids can explore, create, discover, and develop themselves through the guidance of their respective teachers to become responsible, confident, and successful adults in the future. IB teaching methods do not just teach students the theories of different academic subjects, they are also teaching them on how to apply these theories in real life situations, helping the students develop critical thinking skills, practical, emotional, and physical skills.

Dr. Eszter Ditrói-Pusker

Hungarian Language and Literature Teacher / Mother Tongue Language Coordinator

My name is Dr. Eszter Ditrói, and I am from Debrecen, Hungary. I have been teaching in this city for more than 10 years, not just in primary and middle schools, but also at the University of Debrecen. During this time, I also taught a Hungarian as a foreign language to students at the Debrecen Summer School. Currently, I am a teacher in the MYP and DP Hungarian Language and Literature and Language A: Literature at the ISD. I continue to teach at the University of Debrecen as a visiting lecturer.
I graduated as a teacher of Hungarian Language and Literature and also have a PhD in Modern Linguistics. I am also qualified as a teacher of ethnography and ethnology and as a museologist. As I was also interested in languages and their structure from a biological point of view: I obtained a BSc in engineering, specialising mainly in biology I have successfully applied the biostatistical knowledge gained here in my PhD work. Later on, I also completed a degree in chemistry (MSc), using this degree and my previous knowledge in museology.
As an educator, I see my role as that teacher, who emphasizes and helps develop each child's understanding of the trans- and interdisciplinarity, which is an essential part of the IB. Besides I highlight this idea in my classes, I’m building up an energetic and understandable learning environment in my classroom. I love to teach children, and I like to show them the different ways of interpreting and understanding the world around them.

Nicholas De Dios

Design Teacher and K-12 Technological Innovation Coordinator

I enjoy healthy living, travel and photography. Previously worked at International schools in Kazakhstan and Ukraine. In today's rapidly evolving world, education must adapt to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in the real world. One approach that has gained significant traction in this regard is hands-on learning, which encourages students to actively engage in the learning process through practical experiences and tangible applications. This approach is particularly embraced by International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, known for their holistic education model that emphasizes critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, and global-mindedness. By integrating hands-on learning into the IB schools' framework, educators can establish a strong connection between education and the real world, fostering well-rounded and future-ready individuals.

Lilla Dobi

EAL/Individuals & Societies Teacher

My name is Lilla Dobi. I am thrilled to be a part of the ISD community as a co-teacher supporting English Language Learners in MYP Individuals and Societies. I was born in Debrecen, Hungary.
I grew up in a household where I was surrounded by hard-working and open-minded people.
As a high school student, I was lucky enough to attend one of the bilingual schools in Debrecen where I fall in love with English.
I graduated as an English and History teacher from the University of Debrecen in 2022.
As an educator, I believe in providing not only knowledge about the world but helping students to become their best selves. Thus, I encourage learners to think outside the box, be risk-takers and kind to others.

Anthony Flanagan

Visual Arts Teacher

I am a photo-based artist who completed his MFA in Photography at Parsons The New School for Design in 2013. For the last five years he has been a teacher of art, design, and digital media at the International School of Myanmar.
Prior to living and working in Myanmar, Tony was a photography teacher in Las Vegas, Denver, and New York City. He currently is making work that makes connections between vernacular photography, social media, futility and desire.

I want my students to be at the forefront of contemporary image-making and digital literacy in order to be reflective users of online platforms. I push my students to be involved in the world of image making in order to engender a criticality about the medium. Whether they are creating content for TikTok, posting to Instagram, or grappling with emerging platforms and applications, they are involved in all facets of digital media. Through studying and making art, students become attuned to complexity; they learn to recognize the cultural choices that underlie even the most mundane moments and actions of everyday life and consider whether these are the choices they themselves wish to make.

Angéla Fodor

EAL/Science Teacher

Sean Fox

English Language/Literature Teacher, Personal Project Coordinator

My name is Sean Fox. Most recently I had been working with Albania College Tirana, where I was teaching English Literature, Individuals and Society, and English B language acquisition. Over the course of my 10-year career, I have worked as a teacher in the United States, South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, and Albania, teaching English and Science to a variety of age ranges, in both online and traditional classrooms.
As an educator, I believe in offering more than just academic knowledge. It is vital that teachers recognize the importance of continuing their own education in order to pass it on to their students. This should include not just academia, however, but should be expanded and expounded upon to include the areas of: intellectual, emotional, social, physical, creative, aesthetic and spiritual potentials. It is through this type of teaching that educators can build a strong rapport with each individual student and guide them to achieve at a higher level. Students wants to feel safe, be recognized for their work, and have fun with friends while doing so. It is the role of the educator to offer these aspects in their classroom to ensure that the student has the necessary atmosphere to ensure a proper learning community. If an educator can provide a safe and fun atmosphere that is also focused on holistic learning, that is relatable and inclusive to all students, then they are creating a community of learners focused on higher achievement. Outside of school I tend to spend my time looking for a beach where I can relax with a good book. I also enjoy traveling extensively with my wonderful wife, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, trying to learn Korean, and ensuring that I make time for my friends and family. I look forward to starting a new chapter with ISD and I know we will have a collaborative and successful year.

Vivien Giller

EAL Teacher

My name is Vivien Giller and I’m from Budapest. I moved to Debrecen with my family 5 years ago. I was drawn to teaching from a very young age, as my mother is a passionate English and Hungarian language teacher. I have MA degrees in Teaching English Language and Literature and in Dutch Studies specialised in History of Art. I also studied Public Relations at Budapest Business University. During my Secondary School years, I lived in the UK which had a great impact on my life. Later I moved to the Netherlands where I worked and studied.
I have been teaching English for different age groups for more than 10 years. I taught students from primary to university level. I left teaching for a couple of years and worked at a PR Agency in Budapest, which I enjoyed a lot, yet it also helped me recognise my passion for teaching, so I returned to it.
I teach English Language Acquisition in MS in ISD. I enjoy teaching in the IB system as it gives a positive and supportive teaching environment. IB focuses not only on academics but also on personal development and creativity. My aim is to guide students to express themselves and to engage in their own learning. I’m curious about how my students can become more thoughtful and reflective citizens.
In my free time, I like spending time with my family, going out with friends, sewing and reading. I have a great passion for the Arts.

Júlia Handari

Math Teacher

With a background that crosses oceans—from South Africa’s outreach programs to European universities—I have cultivated a teaching philosophy that mirrors a world without borders. Holding a master’s in mathematics and language education, I now share with my students the beauty of numbers and the power of language. In our classroom, mathematics is more than a subject; it’s a journey to understanding, a testament to the belief that every student can shine in an environment that cherishes their unique potential and encourages them to exceed it.

Kristin Hawkinson

English Language/Literature Teacher, Librarian; Extended Essay Coordinator

I am originally from Chicago (go Cubs!), but have worked in Mexico, the Philippines, Korea, and Vietnam prior to joining the ISD community here in Debrecen. I love being outdoors, reading good books, listening to great music, and just exploring what this outstanding world has to offer. As a teacher, I believe that relationships are everything and kids always deserve to be seen, heard, understood and supported, so that they can do and be their best; both for themselves and for others. This also happens to be my favorite thing about the IB! Developing every part of yourself as best you can in order to make this world a better place.

Andrew Kennedy

Individuals & Societies Teacher / Service and Sustainability Learning Coordinator

I am originally from Manchester, England. With a lifelong passion for service, I've been volunteering since the age of 7. My journey led me through nature conservation education before transitioning to mainstream education. Having lived and worked in diverse countries – including Vietnam, South Korea, and the Philippines – I've embraced cultures worldwide.
I have taught many of the major curriculums, but for me I prefer the IB. It offers so much development with the Personal Project, Internal Assessment, Extended EssaY, CAS, ToK and my favorite Service as Action. The IB is a demanding and challenging curriculum, but it produces thoughtful, critical thinking people (teachers and parents/guardians included) to which the world needs.

Carol Lai

Math Teacher / CAS coordinator

I am Carol Lai, who grew up in Taiwan and has lived/worked/studied in the US, Canada and Vietnam. Hungary is my fifth country of residence. Embracing cultural diversity whole-heartedly, I communicate in Mandarin Chinese, English and German. Having degrees in Mathematics and English Literature, I have taught High School English, Academic Writing in English, MYP English Language Acquisition and MYP/DP Mathematics since 2016.

At ISD, I will focus on teaching Mathematics and building the CAS program with wonderful people. To me, the beauty of Mathematics lies in pursuing the ultimate truth with curiosity and perseverance. Mathematics is simultaneously artistic, scientific and philosophical. I am dedicated to bringing such beauty to my students in a collaborative and safe classroom. My classroom of Mathematics is full of “aha moments,” lively discussions, genuine questions, thought-provoking projects and constant feedback.

Outside of teaching Mathematics, I love reading and exploring unknown territories. That is how CAS resonates with me and why I am proud of being an IB educator– we are here together to grow holistically, inquire into everything around us, share the joy of lifelong learning and care for each other.

When I don’t teach, I enjoy running, hiking, cycling, cooking, traveling, coffee and tea, photography, films and documentaries, classical music, and learning languages.

Jesús Mora del Cueto

Music Teacher

My name is Jesús Mora del Cueto and I was born in Mexico City. I have developed an international teaching career for the last 12 years. I trained as a teacher through prestigious universities of the United Kingdom. Gaining a qualification as an EAL teacher through Cambridge University, I later earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Secondary Music from the University of Buckingham and a Master's in international educational leadership from the same university. I undertook my initial studies in general Music and education in the national conservatorium of music in Mexico city.

As a music teacher I have contributed to developing Music departments in international teaching settings and multicultural environments developing Music curricula of international standards, leading extra curricular music activities such as one to one instrumental lessons, orchestras, ensembles, musicals and others, plus encouraging students of diverse musical abilities, and music and non music teachers to participate in the musical life of school.

In addition to this experience I have been a team leader of the MYP and PYP as well as a member of EAL departments contributing to building EAL curriculum simultaneously with the IB .

I have been fortunate enough to work in a number of prestigious international schools, all of which are IB certified. It's been a privilege to work with incredible teachers and students from all over the world. I am delighted and honoured to be expanding my international teaching experience and contributing to building the lSD community.

My international educational experience begins earlier than my professional one as I had the privilege to be a student of the IBDP. This was a wonderful but rigorous experience that opened my mind to the world in an unprecedented way at a young age. It is this experience that made me believe ever since in the IB frameworks; they are of incalculable value for young people. As I have experienced myself, they really are the way to become a lifelong learner, open minded to cultures, as well as a compassionate and thoughtful human being. U believe it develops in students and teachers a will to contribute to the creation of a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding, respect and tolerance.

Aura Puentes

Science Teacher

I am Aura Cristina Puentes Piñeros, a passionate and dedicated educator with eight years of experience in international curriculum. Originally from the city Bogotá in Colombia, I am fluent in English and Spanish, which allows me to communicate effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

As a passionate global citizen, I have spent the last 29 years living in 7 different countries and traveling to more than fifty. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my Ukrainian rescued dog Tartufo; trying new recipes with friends and family, traveling to new places and learning new languages.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said "Real change, enduring change, happens one step at the time", this quote always inspires me to be a risk taker and to take chances and most importantly, to make a positive impact in the places I go, the people I meet, the students I teach and the community I live in.

Robert Sarty

Individuals & Societies / History / English Language & Literature Teacher

Hello, I'm Robert Sarty, a dedicated educator from Ottawa, Canada. For the past two years, I've had the privilege of teaching MYP Individuals and Societies in La Guajira, Colombia's vibrant northern region. My passion for exploring diverse cultures stems from my upbringing as a third culture kid, where I spent significant periods living in Moscow, Russia, and Beijing, China.

I find joy in traveling and language acquisition. Currently, I'm delving into the fascinating world of Hungarian. Beyond academics, my interests include running, reading, and cooking.

As an International Baccalaureate program graduate, I strongly believe in its power to equip students with invaluable inquiry skills that foster adaptability in our ever-changing world. As an educator, I wholeheartedly endorse the IB approach for its ability to nurture personal and academic growth in students. The program encourages students to explore and inquire about the world while taking responsibility for their own learning journey, supported by teachers and peers.
In my teaching style, I prioritize understanding my students' personalities to create a comfortable and conducive learning environment. By identifying shared interests with my students, I design engaging and relevant lessons that cater to their specific needs. It brings me immense enthusiasm to be part of the ISD team, and I am eager to contribute to the growth of this institution as an IB world school.

Heather Shemery

Biology / Chemistry Teacher

My name is Heather Shemery. I am originally from the southeast United States. I was inspired to become a teacher because of very positive experiences I had with teachers who supported and inspired me. I met very brilliant educators who made science feel relatable and exciting. I chose to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Studies and Biology and then, a Master’s Degree in Nutrition. Most recently, I lived in Saudi Arabia where I taught Biology, Chemistry, Health, and Research Skills to students ranging from 6th to 11th grade. Because of how much I have loved teaching science in recent years, I chose to pursue a second Master’s Degree in Anatomical Sciences Education.

I appreciate the IB approach because of its emphasis on fostering curiosity and student agency. It is important to me that science feels like something students can actively experience and take part in. I want students in my classroom to feel the same kind of warm support that made my experience in middle and high school so memorable. Students have the right to feel safe enough to take risks and seek answers to their questions. I truly believe each child is unique and has their own valuable contributions to bring to the science classroom and the community we build.

Eleonóra Southwick

Vera Stanojlovic

Business / EAL Teacher

I’m Vera Stanojlovic, and I am thrilled to be a part of the ISD family! I have a Bachelor of Commerce degree and in a previous life, I worked in Market Research. Following my corporate career, I returned to school to get my Education degree in Ontario, Canada, after which I started my international teaching journey in Bangkok, Thailand before moving to a much smaller and quieter city;
Chisinau, Moldova. I love the excitement of working in the classroom, particularly teaching primary school students, as every day is different from the previous one. My teaching practices are founded on supporting a learning environment which promotes curiosity about the world around us and I love to challenge my students to think outside the box. I have worked with many curricula throughout my teaching career, but I particularly enjoy working within the PYP framework, as students’ curiosity is what drives the learning through the process of inquiry, with teachers primarily being there to scaffold each student along his or her learning trajectory. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, particularly my husband and our daughter, or partaking in any of my hobbies, such as: reading, playing board and card games, cooking and baking, traveling, knitting, or watching a good film.

Loránd Zajta

DP Coordinator, NEASC Accreditation Coordinator, Theory of Knowledge and History Teacher

My name is Loránd Zajta. I am an internationally minded IB educator, born and raised in Budapest, Hungary; I have lived, studied and worked in three different continents. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in History and Jewish Studies from Eötvös Loránd University, a Master's Degree in Education from Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, and a Postgraduate Certificate in International Education from the University of Nottingham. I am joining ISD from Quito, Ecuador, where I was working for an IB World School for almost a decade, in different positions, such as an MYP Individuals and Societies teacher, DP History teacher, MYP Coordinator and Model United Nations Advisor. Additionally, I am an authorized IB Examiner for MYP Personal Projects and an MYP ´Building Quality Curriculum´ Reviewer for Individuals and Societies.
In my experience, meaningful learning processes are those that help my students further discover their path and explore their role in a highly complex and ever-changing world. Truly purposeful learning processes are far-reaching and can eventually lead to transformative experiences. I truly value those concept-based educational programmes, such as the IB Continuum, that progress from play-based, through project-based, and culminate in research-based approaches to learning, and that create a culture of high expectations, that is able to meet the needs of each individual learner, in order to help them reach their personal and academic goals, within diverse contexts. I am passionate about the IB, as its programmes on the one hand are founded on methodologies and strategies that foster agency, and on the other hand help students find and make meaning of their learning.

Whitney Payne Altizer

MS-HS counselor

My name is Whit Altizer, and I am the new DP/MYP Counselor, beginning August 2022. I am in Debrecen with my wife and two children who are students at ISD. I grew up in the southeastern United States where I dreamed of seeing the world outside of my small town. I am very excited to be a part of the growing international community at ISD and learn more about the rich Hungarian history and culture.

When I first graduated college, I went to work in a tech company where I quickly learned that my skills and passion were not being utilized. It's now been 21 years since I left that job to pursue a career in education. Through the years, I have worked and taught in a variety of different places from Mississippi to Saipan and I haven't regretted it for a minute. My family and I have fallen in love and put down roots in parts of the US, South Korea, and the Northern Mariana Islands. We are now excited to be part of the ISD community here in Hungary.

My education philosophy stands firmly on the cornerstone of diverse experiences in education that spans social/emotional counseling, outdoor education, mentorship of at-risk youth, ESL, college counseling, research, and history in the international classroom, all strengthened with countless personal and professional development projects. My philosophy is simple: be prepared, be active, be supportive, be flexible, have fun, and do good work. I look forward to supporting the students of ISD as they make their way through our MYP and DP years and begin to make plans for life after ISD. I hope to help them discover what will give them the same kind of energy I get from school counseling.

If necessary, I provide speech therapy and skill building sessions for children in need.

My work in the school

In the classroom, I help students who have difficulties in learning a subject, and I provide individual development sessions for students with learning difficulties. I work with homeroom teachers to help children meet classroom assignments and expectations.
