Our Grade 2 students recently visited the St. Matrona Retirement Home, where they experienced firsthand how identity, family, and traditions shape who we are and how we belong.
Armed with curiosity and compassion, the students asked residents about their families, childhood memories, and the joys of their younger years. The residents eagerly shared treasured photographs, stories of their youth, and reflections on what has shaped their lives.
The room buzzed with discovery as students compared eye color, hair color, and favorite hobbies with their new friends. One resident even lit up while sharing memories of their own children, a moment that brought both smiles and heartfelt connections.
These conversations created a beautiful exchange of stories across generations. Students learning from the wisdom of the elderly, and residents delighting in the fresh perspectives of youth. Inspired by this encounter, our Grade 2 students took action by writing personal thank you cards to their guest speakers, a small but powerful gesture of gratitude.
This visit reminded us all that service learning is more than an activity. It is a bridge that connects people, sparks empathy, and ensures that important stories and lessons continue to live on through younger generations.
