At ISD, learning extends far beyond textbooks. We believe that children develop the most meaningful understanding when they can experience concepts first-hand, which is why entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and business thinking are introduced from the earliest years of Primary School through engaging, real-life experiences.
In Grade 2, students explored the concept of money by earning classroom currency through demonstrating responsibility, kindness, and respect. They then put their knowledge into practice during their Classroom Market, where they bought and sold treats while making decisions about spending, budgeting, and value. This hands-on experience helps children understand that money is earned through effort and that financial decisions involve making thoughtful choices.
As students progress into Grade 3, their understanding expands beyond personal finance to the wider economy and society. Every year students organise a school-wide Clothes Swap, learning about sustainable consumption while discovering how exchange systems work. They also explored fundraising, different fundraising techniques, and the important role fundraising plays in supporting communities and charitable causes.
Another Grade 3 unit introduced students to different types of organisations, including for-profit businesses, non-profit organisations, and charities. Through inquiry and discussion, students began to understand how organisations pursue different goals while all contributing to society in meaningful ways. They also investigated the role of marketing by analysing real advertisements around the city during an Advertisement Scavenger Hunt, evaluating which campaigns are most effective and why different organisations communicate in different ways.
By Grade 4, students are ready to take on an even bigger challenge through the annual Marketplace Day. During this special unit students create products or services, sell them to customers, calculate their profits, and reflect on the financial and organisational decisions they made throughout the project. This authentic experience allows them to connect mathematics, communication, creativity, collaboration, and economics in one meaningful learning experience.
These projects are about much more than running a market or selling products. They help students understand how industries and economies function, develop financial literacy, practise leadership, manage projects, communicate persuasively, and recognise how businesses can create positive change within their communities. Most importantly, students discover that entrepreneurship is not simply about making a profit—it is about identifying opportunities, solving problems, working with others, and creating value for society.
