Grade 5 Deepens Their Intergenerational Partnership Through Service Learning

By 2025.11.24.No Comments

Our incredible Grade 5 team kicked off the year by reconnecting with residents from the local retirement home, continuing a partnership that has become a highlight of our Service Learning program. Students arrived ready with thoughtful questions and open hearts, and soon the room was filled with laughter, shared stories, and genuine conversation. Together, they enjoyed snacks, swapped memories, and participated in activities from balloon challenges to coloring that created joyful moments and strengthened fine motor skills for both generations.

What truly stood out was the confidence and comfort our students displayed. Conversations flowed naturally, with none of the hesitation often expected during intergenerational exchanges. Their ease was a testament to their growth; the communication skills they developed last year through regular visits to a local public school transferred beautifully into this new context, allowing them to build relationships quickly and authentically.

This ongoing partnership continues to show why Service Learning matters. By stepping outside the classroom and engaging with people who have lived vastly different lives, our students broaden their perspectives, build empathy, and experience the transformative power of human connection. Each visit helps them grow as open minded, compassionate global citizens ready to make a positive impact in their community.
