Learning jumped off the page and into the kitchen this week as our Grade 7 students transformed their math unit on proportions into a real-world culinary challenge. Rather than simply working through equations, students applied their understanding by designing healthy recipes and experimenting with ingredient ratios discovering firsthand what happens when you adjust the balance between flour, butter, sugar, and more. Through this delicious experimentation, they quickly learned that proportions are not just numbers on a worksheet, they are a practical life skill used in everyday decision-making.
Students took over the school kitchen to bake healthy cookies, cupcakes, and desserts, as well as prepare drinks to accompany their creations. Their original Service as Action plan was to visit the retirement home and share both their food and learning, but when that partnership visit was no longer possible this year, they showed adaptability and purpose by choosing to serve within the ISD community instead. Students shared their baked goods with teachers, staff, and classmates, gathering feedback on taste, texture, and accuracy of proportions, turning the experience into a cycle of creation, reflection, and improvement.
This hands-on project not only deepened their understanding of proportions but also embodied the spirit of Service as Action using learning to create something meaningful for others.
