At the IB Global Conference 2024, Grade 12 student István Kiss delivered a compelling speech in front of 1,600 educators from all around the globe, that underscored the profound impact of IB education on his life as a student. Drawing inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he emphasized that true greatness lies in service and dedication.
István shared his personal journey, transitioning from a traditional Hungarian background to becoming a proud member of the International School of Debrecen and a global community. This shift opened doors to a wealth of opportunities, allowing him to engage in a rigorous academic environment that fostered critical thinking and resilience. He highlighted how the IB program equipped him with essential skills, such as research, communication, and collaboration, which are vital for success in today’s world.
Through the support of his educators, whom he described as heroes, István navigated challenges like language barriers and the pressures of the Diploma Programme. Their encouragement of teachers and the impact that a dedicated educator has on a young mind, was instrumental in helping him embrace the most important skills, like open-mindedness and reflective thinking.
His journey also included transformative experiences, such as representing Hungary in a U.S. State Department project, where he connected with peers from all over the world. This exposure not only enhanced his global perspective but also reinforced his commitment to becoming a changemaker in his community.
During his speech István urged educators to recognize their vital role in shaping future leaders. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities and skills he gained through the IB program, emphasizing that these experiences have empowered him to think critically and act compassionately in an interconnected world.
