Bridging the Gap: Grade 6 Students Design Smooth Transition to MYP for Younger Peers

One important learning project at the end of the semester was the MYP students’ Interdisciplinary Unit Week (IDU), which is designed to bring together concepts, methods or models of communication from two or more subjects in order to develop new perspectives. The project of some Grade 6 students was to design a transition program for students in Grade 5. The goal of this program was to help the younger students have a smooth move from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The Grade 6 students started by leading some icebreaker activities to help to get to know each other better in their groups. The younger students also had a chance to meet some of the teachers they will have next year while participating in fun activities. Later sixth graders then ran sessions to help fifth graders understand important aspects of the MYP, including the school’s online learning platform, grading rubrics, and what it means to have an international mindset.

To wrap up the day, they finished with reflection sessions for both groups that allowed students to evaluate the impact of the day. What a great and useful learning outcome for everyone!

This was a great opportunity for the older students to develop their leadership skills while supporting the younger students through an important academic transition.

We are proud of the work these students did to create a welcoming experience.
