Students from Grades 6–8 of the International School of Debrecen had the opportunity to take part in an unforgettable study trip to Transylvania through the Határtalanul! (Without Borders!) Programme, funded by the Government of Hungary. The programme aims to strengthen connections between young Hungarians living in Hungary and Hungarian communities beyond the country’s borders by providing first-hand experiences of their shared cultural and historical heritage.

During the journey, our students visited several remarkable locations, including Oradea (Nagyvárad), Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), Corund (Korond), Praid (Parajd), Lupeni/Farkaslaka, Odorheiu Secuiesc (Székelyudvarhely) and the spectacular Turda Gorge (Tordai-hasadék). Along the way, they explored the rich history, culture and natural beauty of Transylvania while learning about the everyday life and traditions of Hungarian communities living across the border. The trip provided valuable educational experiences, strengthened students’ sense of national identity and belonging, and created lasting memories that they will cherish for years to come. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this meaningful programme made possible through the support of the Government of Hungary.

Teaching with a Different Perspective: The Grade 10 Personal Project at ISD

Education should prepare students not only for exams, but for life. True learning is not simply about memorising facts—it is about understanding how knowledge is built, how ideas are tested, and how young people can apply what they know in meaningful ways.

This is one of the greatest strengths of the International Baccalaureate (IB) model. Students are encouraged to think independently, ask thoughtful questions, solve problems creatively, and reflect on their own growth. One of the most powerful examples of this approach is the Grade 10 Personal Project, the culminating experience of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The Personal Project is far more than a traditional assignment. It is an extended independent project in which students choose a topic that genuinely interests them and turn that interest into purposeful learning. They may design a product, launch a campaign, create art, write a book, build a prototype, investigate an issue, or develop a solution to a real-world challenge.

What makes this project especially valuable is that students do not only present a final result—they learn to understand how they know what they know.

Throughout the project, students follow a structured process of investigation, action, and reflection. They begin by defining a clear goal and setting success criteria for what a strong final outcome should look like. They then conduct research using a variety of sources such as books, interviews, online materials, surveys, or practical experimentation. Along the way, they learn how to judge whether information is reliable, useful, and relevant.

Students are also expected to explain their decisions. They reflect on why they chose a particular method, design, material, or strategy—not just what they did, but the thinking behind it. This helps students become more intentional, analytical, and self-aware learners.

For families, the Personal Project is often one of the most rewarding moments of the school year. Parents see their children taking ownership of a long-term challenge, managing their time, overcoming setbacks, and presenting their ideas with maturity and confidence.

The final stage of the journey is the Personal Project Exhibition, where Grade 10 students proudly showcase their work to the school community. This event is always an inspiring display of creativity, perseverance, and personal growth. It highlights not only what students created, but also the depth of thinking and learning behind each project.

It also provides excellent preparation for the next phase of education. As students move toward the IB Diploma Programme and future university pathways, they will need to research independently, manage deadlines, think critically, and communicate clearly. This project gives them an outstanding foundation for those future challenges.

Teaching and Learning at ISD Means Building Skills for Life

Caring teachers build strong relationships with students and help them grow both academically and personally. What a wonderful way to start the new year!

Students returned to school in the first week of 2026 to a delightful surprise, as a rare winter scene unfolded in Hungary. Nearly 20 cm of fresh snow covered the campus, turning the school grounds into a true winter wonderland. Laughter filled the air as students eagerly ran, played in the snow, and built snowmen together, making the most of this special moment.

Behind the scenes, our dedicated maintenance team worked tirelessly through challenging conditions to clear parking areas and pathways, ensuring that everyone could move around the campus safely. We are truly grateful for their commitment and hard work. A special thank you also goes to DVSC Labdarúgó Akadémia, who generously arrived with two tractors to support the snow-clearing efforts. Their help made a significant difference and reminded us once again how valuable community cooperation can be.

Moments like these show that even unexpected weather can bring our community together and turn an ordinary school week into a memorable start to the year.
